Nawada


Nawada is a Town and a Municipality in Bihar state of India. It is also the Administrative Headquarters of the Nawada district. Nawada town is situated on both sides of the Khuri River at around 24º 53’ N and 85º 33’ E.  Right side of river have old stalemate, while left side is modern & have all offices.  Its name is evolved from sanskrit word 'Nau-abad', meaning the 'New Town' which was earlier known as ‘The Eliot Market (Bazaar)’. It was established as a Subdivision of Gaya district in 1845. Nawada was formed as a separate district from Gaya district on 26th January 1973 & Nawada Town is made as its headquarter.

History

The history of Nawada is part of the history of the ancient empire of Magadh which included the undivided districts of Patna, Gaya & Nalanda. Nawada was ruled by differnt dynasties in different course of time , like Haranyakakul, Nanda, Maurya, Gupta, Pala, Sherqui, Mughal etc., before East India Company succeeded in establishing their hold over this area. After its acquisition by the East India Company, Nawada was in great instability until 1845, when it became the headquarters of the newly created subdivision. The elements of instability resurfaced in nawada again during the revolt of 1857, when Nawada was rove over by marauder. The local offices were destroyed, but Government records were saved by the native officials who hide them in a cave on a neighboring hill. These are the only available public records dating back to an era before 1857 in the district.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, Nawada City has a population of 180,740 (after adding new wards in town area in year 2022). Nawada has a ratio of 957 females for every 1,000 males. The average literacy rate is 79.34%, which is lower than National Urban average of 85 %, male literacy is 83.76%, and female literacy is 74.43%. In Nawada, the children (0-6 age) population is around 14.69 % of total Nawada town population which is higher than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Hindi, Magahi and Urdu are the main languages spoken in Nawada.

Prajatantra Dwar located at Prajatantra Chowk of Nawada district headquarters is considered a symbol of the independence of the country. After independence, Prajatantra Gate was constructed by Lt. Kanhai Lal Sahu. This gate, completely constructed on 26 January 1950, still inspires passion for Indian independence among people.






Govardhan Temple is a very old temple of the town. Renovation of this temple is started in 2014 with a courtesy of 5 Cr. by Rajballabh Prasad Yadav. Inaguration of this temple after renovation is done in Jan 2023. There are three temples in its premises. First is dedicated to Radha & Krishna, second to Hanuman Ji and third to lord shiva. Renovation of this temple is done in southern india style (Dravidian architecture). Every day large number of visitor came to see its beauty.




Hazrat Syed Shah Jalaluddin Bukhari's tomb and Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple, located together in Nawada, are considered a symbol of communal harmony. On Friday, people of Hindu and Muslim communities offer chadar at Baba's shrine and make wishes. A huge crowd of devotees can be seen in the Hanuman temple every Tuesday & Saturday. The foundation day of the temple is celebrated every year on Akshaya Tritiya of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha. A huge Ursa is celebrated every year at Baba's Mazar immediately after the Ursa of Ajmer Sharif.

Narada Museum is one of the major museums of India. This museum came into existence in the year 1973 due to the efforts of the first District Officer of Nawada, Narendra Pal Singh. The museum building is two-storeyed. Its first floor displays the development of ancient coins in India. The gradual evolution of coins in India from the early punch-mark coins to the Mughal-era coins can be seen in the museum. Mauryan period bone artefacts, Sunga period clay figurines, beads, seals and metal artefacts obtained from Sonsa fort have been displayed in various galleries of the museum. The discovery of Sonsa Garh is considered as an achievement of Narada Museum. Apart from this, the statue of Manjushree obtained from Devangarh and metal sculptures related to Buddhism, Jainism and Hindu religion are displayed in the museum. Lt. Hiralal Baban ji has depicted the sword, dagger and shield of the Mughal period as well as the couplet of the famous Persian poet Hafez.


Harishchandra Stadium was inagurated in 1973 by S.N Lal Gupta (SP of Nawada at that time). Many types of sports tournaments are organised at this stadium, some are even of state level. Currently condition of this stadium is not so good. Evey year Ravan dahan is organised here, large number of people gather here to see it.








Adarsh Water Park was inugrated on 11 June 2019. It is one of the best place to enjoy with your family in summer time. It has different water slides and water activities, like wave pool, rain dance etc.







Guniyaji Tirtha is situated in Guniyaji village of Nawada district. This temple is dedicated to Jain sage Gandhar Gautam Swami. It is believed that Gautam Swami was a disciple of Mahavir ji. It was established by Jains. This ancient temple dates back to the time of Lord Mahavir. At present this temple is being maintained by Shri Jain Shwetambar Bhandar Trust.





Guniyaji Tirtha is situated in Guniyaji village of Nawada district. This temple is dedicated to Jain sage Gandhar Gautam Swami. It is believed that Gautam Swami was a disciple of Mahavir ji. It was established by Jains. This ancient temple dates back to the time of Lord Mahavir. At present this temple is being maintained by Shri Jain Shwetambar Bhandar Trust.
